Epitaph… It is the name which the Metal Godsdecided to give, JUDAS PRIEST, with their round of good-byes. Not only the English put a term at their career (scenic… there is no doubt that soon will appear of the live, scarcities and other compilations) but, with a similar name, one could believe that they decided definitively to bury the myth after forty years of career. D' as much more than last on April 20, JUDAS PRIEST posted on its site www.judaspriest.com a news more than surprising: KK DOWNING, the guitarist cofounder of the group, decided to take its retirement. It does not form from now on officially more part of JUDAS PRIEST which n' was not long in finding to him a substitute in the person of Ritchie FAULKNER, young 31 year old guitarist, presented by the group like more than talented, and which " will put fire on scène" as of the concert d' opening of this new round, on June 7 withTilburg, in Holland.
When was born JUDAS PRIEST on the side of Birmingham in 1970, nobody would have dared to hope for a career also long nor also rich person. This one, however is not finished. Because what the group buries, they are the long rounds, not the concerts nor the recordings of albums. As much of other formations to the career more than honourably long, JUDAS PRIEST will have known tops and bottoms, as well as regards artistic or commercial success as in terms of image near the public. But a thing remains certain: it is that JUDAS PRIEST became a reference impossible to circumvent since its beginnings. The
SEVENTIES
Kenneth DOWNING, born on October 27, 1951, and Ian HILL, which were born on January 20, 1952, know each other since their more young age. They attended the same schools and, in a certain manner, were built together, being discovered, during the adolescence of the common musical tastes. It is naturally that they decide to learn how to play of an instrument:Kenneth chooses the guitar, Ian the low one. When they are estimated ready, the two accomplices decide to found a group. We are then in 1970. They are joined at that time by Alan ATKINS, a singer whose group, which names JUDAS PRIEST, have just separated and which proposes its services to them. If the beginnings of the group are done under the influence of the blues, DOWNING insists that JUDAS PRIEST hardens the tone. Its music becomes more rock'n'roll and harder, and groups it, without appointed beater, scum the area of Birmingham. But of the internal dissensions, which had, inter alia reasons, with financial problems, force the departure of Alan ATKINS. A first change is essential then, which will have an impact determining on the remainder of the life ofJUDAS PRIEST.
Ian HILL at that time attends an young girl whose brother sings within HIROSHIMA. It suggests with its in love considering the possibility of recruiting it. Rob HALFORD, which has the same age since it came in the world on August 25, 1951, integrates JUDAS PRIEST thus and embarks with him its beater John HINCH. If the legend is not yet goes from there, the adventure can however start. For that, the quartet integrates, according to the suggestion of its label, a second guitarist; impetuous Glenn TIPTON, although three years its groin (it unloaded on the planet on October 25, 1948) which will well quickly become the alter ego of that one calls from now on KK DOWNING. JUDAS PRIEST thus supplemented enters in studio in order to give birth, under the crook of producer Rodger BAIN, to Rocka Rolla, its first effort. An attempt which does not mark the history of the music, the producer having used of its influence and its notoriety (it in particular worked with BLACK SABBATH) to draw aside from the songs which the group will use later: The Ripper, Genocide or Tyrant were thus sacrificed on the furnace bridge of the necessary production. The formation however learns the lessons from this recording in order to not make this type of error more and to better trust with its judgement. From now on, JUDAS PRIEST gives each other an active role in the production, and starts, at the sides of Jeffrey CALVERT and Max WEST, as of the recording of Sad Wings Of Destiny which leaves in 1976. For this disc, Alan MOORE holds the rods, but it will be replaced soon. The recording company, Gull, can be declared satisfied with the beginning of success met by the album of its foalta. The pieces previously isolated touch just like the public, it from now on traditional Victim Of Changes.
the legend is moving. JUDAS PRIEST starts to interest of the majors, among whom CBS which ended up lodging, and for many years English formation. The label hopes well to capitalize on this group with the growing reputation and to obtain a return on investment. As of 1977, JUDAS PRIEST fate first fruit of this new collaboration: Sin After Sin, recorded with beater Simon PHILIPS, produced byRoger GLOVER ( DEEP PURPLE), is recorded to the Ramport Studios of London. The group signs there the traditional futures which are Sinner or Dissident Agressor and takes again what will become impossible to circumvent at the time of its concerts, Diamonds And Rust, that Joan BAEZ, singer folk, made timeless. Sin After Sin also sees the team increasing with the arrival of Roslav SZABO, a member of theteam CBS , who deals of the design and the design of the illustrations of the albums of JUDAS PRIEST. The album marks by its orientation more fundamentally Hard and thus manages to allure the English public which offers a pretty 23rd place in its charts to him.
the group reinforces its scenic presence then in order to beat iron as long as it is hot. England falls gradually and JUDAS PRIEST is even seen invited in the USA to take part in the Day On The Green Festival at the side of LED ZEPPELIN. This voyage in addition to the Atlantic is done in company from the new beater,Les BINKS, and makes it possible to the English to see growing their reputation in the Uncle Sam.
Of return in studio, JUDAS PRIEST is harnessed with the recording of a new album. Gull benefits from aubaine to leave a first Best Of JUDAS PRIEST capping on the post the exit, in 1978, of Stained Class. This last, with titles a little more ventilated like Savage, Saints in Hell, Exciter, White Heat Red Hot or Beyond The Realms Of Death, presents a facet a little more “software” of the PRIEST , which seems to slightly disturb the English public which places it only in 27th position. This disc, however, however confirms the position of leader of JUDAS PRIESTwhereas scene Heavy British, who undergoes full whip the explosion of vice of the Punk, is given for dying woman.
Only, JUDAS PRIEST with the conquering spirit and proposes in the same year a disc much harder, forging (finally) the style which made its legend. Killing Machine, however undergoes the American censure because of its title. The album there is published under the name of Hell Bent For Leather (one of the songs of the album) and marks the spirits so much so that the round which follows will see the number dates to enlarge week after week. Because nonglad to work out the musical codes of the Heavy Metal modern, JUDAS PRIEST in also redefined the image. Whereas many musicians evolve/move with the appearance of hippies, Rob HALFORD and its accomplices adopt a look much more in connection with the music: leather clothing very of chains and barded nails becomes the soon indissociable visual mark group. A sadomasochistic spirit maso enters to the service of a virile music and macho.JUDAS PRIEST can finally take off, having found at the same time a sound and an image. The English accomodate the album with open arms although offering a less good classification in the charts to him (n°32) and the Americans start to take the group with serious (n°128).
Japan is selected so that the first public testimony of JUDAS PRIEST is recorded which appears in 1979. Unleashed In The East cases everywhere, being classified on the two sides of the ocean (n° 10 in England and 70 in the USA) and will be soon suspected than of being worked again more in studio, so much so that some “ Unleahed In The Studio will call it”. It does not matter… because JUDAS PRIEST shows with brilliance its control of the scene, and the passion of the public is quite real. But the round will have been right of the beater. Les BINKS leaves the group which replaces it by Dave HOLLAND. Begin then long and very profitable collaboration which will last all the following decade. On its side, Gull continues to benefit from its old foal while leaving a new compilation in the shape an double album,Hero, Hero which reports, again, the first hours of the English. The
EIGHTIES
the legend settles, and that without wasting time. Benefitting from its image - miraculeusement remained intact in spite of the tidal wave Punk - and from surge of young people groups with teeth long (movement which the world will know soon under acronym NWOBHM), JUDAS PRIEST proposes soon a new album, accompanied, this time, beater Dave HOLLAND. British Steel, produces by Tom ALLOM, makes a paperboard immediate - and durable - grace to its modernism and its determination. From now on the traditional Living After Midnight and Breaking The Law are immediately the prey of the radios which make true anthems of the Heavy Metalof them, placing the album in 4th and 34ème place of the English and American Signal. England yields, followed by the old continent, the USA are conquered, and JUDAS PRIEST knows finally the pleasure of certifications by receiving platinum gold discs then. The group launches out once again in an intensive American round and is finally propelled with the row of world sure value. Europe will also be the subject of a ramming in rule. The last years between galères and hopes from now on are made profitable, the more so as the formation thus made up (producing included) will remain stable throughout the decade, and will give rise to the largest albums of JUDAS PRIEST.
Successes, stable formation, trustful label. It is natural for all the actors to want to capitalize on the name of JUDAS PRIEST. An obligation however remains to be filled: it is I
