When guitarist Rudolf SCHENKER founds, in Hanover, SCORPIONS, it is in the middle of Germany with two faces, which lives in full cold war. It is the case of the husbands SCHENKER who encourage their children and push them in the new artistic ways.
Rudolf SCHENKER launches out in the adventure since 1965 by melting the group of its life: SCORPIONS. The years pass, as well as the musicians, the young man forging his musical identity with the liking of its small experiments. His/her brother Michael, also guitarist, joined it in 1970. It comes from a group which names COPERNICUS it discharges the singer Klaus MEINE who becomes soon indissociable image of the SCORPIONS.
1972 see the first efforts rewarded with the exit for a first album, Lonesome Crow. The small arthropod chose to entitle its first test “the solitary corbel”… If the title can pass for original, the songs, as for them, provide the foundations of the music which will develop SCORPIONS in the years to come: the guitars play a prevalent part, as well in the melodies as in the behaviour of the riffs, the so particular voice of Klaus making the unit rather easily identifiable, although in the vein of the music d' then. This first test makes it possible SCORPIONS to ensure the first part of Rory GALLAGHER, URIAH HEEP or UFO , the latter managing to discharge Michael SCHENKER. The fair guitarist leaves his brother since 1973 to join Pete WAY and his band.
At this point in time a phenomenon joined SCORPIONS : Uli John ROTH shines as much by its play as by its mysticism and its look hippie. But more still, without it not being obvious for the time being, it is the arrival of discrete bass player Francis BUCHHOLZ, a future pillar of the group, which will pass more than fifteen years with SCORPIONS, qu ' it is necessary to notice. the following year, when time had just prepared a new album, SCORPIONS starts long and profitable collaboration with producer Dieter DIERKS. Illustrated by a photograph full with a subtle erotism (signed Michael Von GIMBUT), In Trance appears in 1975 and is dissociated more still by the power of songs passed to the posterity: Dark Lady, In Trance, Robot Man… SCORPIONS redefines its music somewhat by preserving the ingredients used previously (double voice Klaus/Uli , effective and memorable melodies) by subtly drawing aside the aspects too psychedelic (always present on Evening Wind or Sun In My Hand) for this centring on essence. In Trance fact then of exploding SCORPIONS in Japan - and becomes even the best sale ever actual by an album RCA with the country of the rising sun. Also let us note that the image of the SCORPIONS is refined thanks to a new signature: the logo which will become soon indissociable image of the group. The Germans leave to furrow part of the continent of Europe in opening KISS, an opportunity which does not refuse. Elected by their fellow-citizens better group live German, SCORPIONS then attacks his first English round which saw the five musicians investing the Marquee of London.
Si its international career is well launched, SCORPIONS must maintain the pressure musical and returns again in studio to the beginning of the year 1976, with a new beater (4th in 4 albums, but this time, it is the good!) in the person of Herman RAREBELL perfect during rhythmic of Francis BUCHHOLZ. This time, the Germans do all so that one speaks about them: scandalous illustration of cover showing a naked sitted teenager behind a pane where one guesses the passage of a ball of firearm to the musical contents, all the reasons of the world are joined together so that Virgin Killer is the subject for conversation of the moment. SCORPIONS has just found the identity of its music with this line up exceptional, proposing ballades more than successful (In Your Park and Yellow Raven). Only one difficulty remains to be noted: there can be only one singer. It would be preferred that more " hendrixien" German guitarists (Uli ROTH) leaves Klaus MEINE Master of the voices on Polar Nights. This forgotten fault, SCORPIONS continue to be essential and gains even its first gold disc in Japan, is crowned better album of the year in Germany… All seems to go for best and to smile to the Germans in these Seventies.
Crachant its venom as long as there is, Rudolf SCHENKER and its troop decide to confirm the potential and the artistic importance of SCORPIONS as quickly as possible. Always accompanied by Dieter DIERKS, the group is harnessed with the realization from sublime the Taken By Force. After the scandal of the preceding small pocket, the album is illustrated only by one band on which are reproduced the photograph and the name of each musician and with the center of the small pocket is registered the title. More sober, you die! The message under heard is clear: it is the wafer inside which must interest us. And there, there is nothing to repeat: SCORPIONS found its balance and passes to high speed, being placed in the leading bunch of the European formations of this end of decade. Steamrock Fever, and its guitars howling completely cut for scene, accompanies futures traditional that are We’ll Burn The Sky (and its soft introduction which will become the signature of the ballades suitable for the group), The Riot Of Your Time, discussed (something was needed well nevertheless!) He’s A Woman – She’s A Man - ultra speed and violent one (ah! these barkings of Klaus !) - or very the " hendrixien" The Sails Of Charion which carries the last marks of the psychedelic era.
SCORPIONS embarks then for a new world tour which will pass, in April 1978, by Japan where the double live Tokyo Tapeswill be recorded, a collection of 18 of best creations of the Germans. Vis-a-vis a public any receipt with its cause, SCORPIONS is explosive from beginning to end, or almost. The great classics are abundance (Backstage Queen, In Trance, We’ll Burn The Sky, Steamrock Fever, He’s A Woman – She’s A Man…), as well as the passage “obliged” Pictured Life on which sings ROTH, for the last time. Because, at the conclusion of this round marathon, the guitarist wire of the sun and the moon leaves his accomplices to found ELECTRIC SUN. It is besides this title which will be withdrawn from the republication CD a few years later in order to be able to make hold this concert on only one disc…
De return in Germany, before to have found a new guitarist, the group enters once again in studio where Michael comes to assist his/her brother. The recording of Lovedrive starts whereas hearings continue. The group thinks of integrating an English or American instrumentalist, but finally, its choice goes on a young German, Matthias JABS who sees himself granting time to learn a few pieces before entering in studio. Crowned baptism of fire for that which will become the alter-ego of Rudolf SCHENKER, and one of the pillars of the group, still present today.
