METAL INTEGRAL : Joey, which are your impressions after this first Parisian concert ofARMORED SAINT since the birth of the group?
Joey VERA : Waoh! There was not a lot of people, but which welcome! Which mood! That was fantastic, really…
METAL INTEGRAL : Exactly, and one had to ask you this question of the tens of time since your arrival, but how do you explain that never in thirty years groups it did not produce itself in France?
Joey VERA : I do not know… IT IS in left due to our house of discs of then, Chrysalis that did not desire to invest time and money to do us to play in Europe. They preferred that one concentrates on the American market, broadcastings radio and this thing kind that seemed them more to be the manner "normal" to do the things. And that, that frustrated us really… One grew while listening all these European groups and we must went in Europe, that had direction for us.
METAL INTEGRAL : Especially to that era.
Joey VERA : Totally, yes. Especially with the explosion of the NWOBHM. One already was present, and one wanted to come. This was very difficult to convince everyone of us there to do to play. Result: we never played in Europe with the exception of some special concerts at the end of the years 80, as the Dynamo Open Air in Holland, and some other shows. But one never did a true turned one. Until… Revelation, in 2000, for which one gave 7 or 8 concerts in Europe.
METAL INTEGRAL : A small turned one…
Joey VERA : All small one, yes. But one was there during almost three weeks. This was our true first turned European one. It is necessary for us so a long time, almost twenty years, to come here… THIS IS really damage. But, as explained it John tonight on scene, France is also a market rather difficult for us, for there to play: is a not very outlying, a little to the south of Germany, one never played not more to the United Kingdom, in Spain, one played only recently in Italy… This was not evident to find an offer that gives us the means to come here. I believe as as, when at last we were able to come, ARMORED SAINT already was considered as an old group, the group was a not very idle, John was with ANTHRAX, I played with FATES WARNING… The promoters were rather hesitating, wondering that was ARMORED SAINT, although we ayions taken out a new album, Revelation. This was rather strange to do the anticipations, to plan things while trying integrate concerts with of already foreseen others, without losing money…
METAL INTEGRAL : To this subject, you played Sonisphere ofAmnéville two days ago. ARMORED SAINT was announced as early as the departure, then your participation was canceled before of vour to reintegrate to the poster. What is it passed itself? Is this related to the cancellation of the Sonisphere britanique, the organizers being afraid of to lose too much money?
Joey VERA : Yes, I believe effectively that the organizers have trouble with the Sonisphere this year, in comparison of what they did the last year, and the force of the Big 4. It was difficult for them to be able to combine a such posts, and I think that they had to change things. They started with to choose a smaller place. The English festival was completely canceled, and in France, they also decided to withdraw some groups, for they not all could pay them. One was part of the batch, but one has had a lot of supports from our big Parisian friend, Olivier GARNIER, and of our agent Dan BEHLER. I believe that the passion of which Olivier showed really convinced the organizers. And, I believe that this finally became a favor sort, a sort of "good thing" for all the implied people in the adventure. It is a very good thing for us, but one tries to show humility facing the Fact that these shows simply can have took place, and that the things thus turned. That almost escaped us, and that was worth really the penalty. The public was really fantastic tonight.
METAL INTEGRAL : Your tonight concert unfolded itself in a room a lot smaller than two days ago. There had to be about 200 people. Which effect that you does to play in places so different, and that do you prefer: to play in clubs with a restricted numbers of spectators, or play in festival facing more important crowds?
Joey VERA : The two are completely different… Each has its advantages. It does not there have nothing that I do not like in the one or the other case, but there are things that I like in the two… The big festivals are funny for one is on of big scenes, the sono always is very good quality, and, even if one has only of the fans in front of we, one is exposed to new heads that we must seduce. This is communication, and touch a new public is always a good thing. To play in clubs, also, is well. This is a little as to return to the house, there where everyone you connait. The return of the public always is warm, as a big party with of old friends, even if you never met them. But one feels that we have something in common. And to play only in front of 200 people? That has no importance… IF IT is a matter of 200 people as the one of tonight? Then this is a true success!
METAL INTEGRAL : You do not have any new album to promote, and according to what I was able to hear, there was not again titles…
Joey VERA : Tonight? If, one played some… two.
METAL INTEGRAL : Ok... Therefore, you have new equipment. Does that mean that you foresaw a new album?
Joey VERA : Ah, ah, ah! That this is a question traps! Well seen... You know, there is a sort agreed between we all that says that one does not do anticipations, one plans nothing too in advance. But one passes good time, one takes pleasure with what surrounded the go out of the last album, the concerts that one gave. One only came to an agreement on the not fact to await also a long time before recording a new album. Our three last discs were spaced of ten years. One will not await ten years, it is sure. When, I do not know, but not ten years.
METAL INTEGRAL : There already are things of ready ones.
Joey VERA : Yes, and one has also equipment on which worked us already at the time of the preparation of La Raza. One does not leave zero. The hardest one is in fact to rediscover itself and to begin concentrating, and to compose. One oneself there could put before the end of the year, it is conceivable.
METAL INTEGRAL : You played with ANTHRAX, we are in France. With ANTHRAX, you played returns Antisocial, of TRUST. What do you know other of this group that is a myth here, and that do you know French scene in his body?
Joey VERA : I do not know big thing, in reality. I am not familiar with all their discs… I remind of this group, H-BOMB. Are they well French, no? And recently, GOJIRA. And, there is also a group with which I worked, a group that is called MALADAPTIVE, that had hired me to mix pieces. But I believe that they separated themselves, the bass player plays with DRAGONFORCE or a thing as that, I am not mistaken?
METAL INTEGRAL : I could not reply you… And then, it is I who asks the questions!
Joey VERA : (Laugh) OK… I LIKE really a lot GOJIRA, this are really very gifted guys. But I am upset, this is almost all.
METAL INTEGRAL : If the tonight concert was the first one of ARMORED SAINT to Paris, you already came in France and in the capital with ANTHRAX.
Joey VERA : Yes, I believe that this is my fifth visit here.
METAL INTEGRAL : You agree with what John said tonight on the subject of Paris?
Joey VERA : I love this city. I liked it since my very first visit. I know a little the history of Paris and France, but, more simply, I like the places where the culture maintained itself during centuries. One has not as much of this culture to the United States. We have our own culture, but she is so young that we cannot have the same approach, the same attitude concerning many things, because we are a country a lot younger one. I appreciate simply the places where I return through Europe. France is a country… very trusted you of that you are, and this is what said John, this pride, you not must lose it. There are certain countries where they lose their identity, without I doing not understand why. I understand the progress, certain positions necessitate changes, but I love to take a walk in the streets in France, see an old man sit on a bench, sip a beer and observe the people that pass, and I am said that someone did that since centuries. I find that simply great.
METAL INTEGRAL : A last thing: when do you count to return in France?
Joey VERA : I not in knows anything, fairly. We developed a privileged relation with the people that sent for ourselves here tonight. Everyone feels that we will be again the welcomes, and one has some really envies. One joked tonight while saying that the next time it would be necessary to attract more world (NDMP : you astonish me!) but someone said that to return it is necessary for us a new album! Therefore, one has work to do (laugh)! We will await not again ten years before a new album, and I think that we will be return in France in the five next years.
